A blog post from Elanation’s COO, Aimee Atkins
In every adult there lies a big kid, and for Aimee Atkins, there lies a very big kid, on a very big mission.
I always knew that one-day I would build a global children’s company. It would be the output of my unique ability to merge a hilarious streak for fun and entertainment with a deep mission to inspire the growth of healthy, happy kids globally.
Straight out of school, I was offered the role of Dorothy the Dinosaur in The Wiggles, Dorothy the Dinosaur and Friends Show. Since then, I’ve spent 20 years, on a whirlwind adventure, working with some of the most famous children’s brands around the world; Bob the Builder, Bananas in Pyjamas, Fifi and the Flowertots and DirtGirlWorld to name a few.

Rewind to my childhood, I grew up like any other Aussie family – outdoors and in the waves. I spent hours on end attending dance classes at the local dance school run by my Nana, learning to sail, experimenting with a myriad of sports, exploring the outdoors, creating imaginative games, learning to cook, performing talent quests in the lounge room, running around the neighbourhood and going on XPT day trips.
To me (and many of you) this was normal; a childhood full of outdoor adventure, creativity, imagination and most importantly FUN. It was also a time when all your friends watched the same TV show daily and chatted about it in the school playground the very next day. It was a time when being bored was just a normal part of childhood. A time when you had to pull out the Encyclopaedia Britannica just to find answers to your homework.
Back then there was one big difference; there was no Internet, mobile phones or computers being handed to kids.

So here lies the frustration for many families I meet within my role at ELANATION today. Not only are many of you (parents) juggling full-time or part-time jobs, whilst wearing many hats within for your family; nutritionist, chauffeur, educator, judge, cheerleader, personal assistant, party planner, fun creator, sports coach, bodyguard, lifeguard and tantrum manager… and now, a new and sometimes overwhelming hat has come to the table, ‘Chief Internet and technology police officer’.
So how does one start to become a “Chief Internet and technology police officer for the family”? Well, parents start by researching methods from industry professionals; educators, doctors and psychologists. They then test and trial an assortment of rules and boundaries inside their home. The rules twist and turn, calm technology ‘discussions’ turn into bribes with a handful of negotiation tactics. Soon, power cords start being hidden, the internet gets turned off during weekdays, and the battlefield of tantrums emerge. Sound familiar?
At a recent AWS Amazon Summit in Sydney, there were approximately 4,000 tech savvy dads visiting the ELANATION booth. I stood there, demonstrating our latest ETURBO smart watch for kids, while Dad’s opened up about their day-to-day struggles introducing ‘healthy’ technology into their family home. These Dads knew the technology world was moving at an astronomical pace and their desire to introduce ‘healthy’ technology solutions for their family was high on their priority list.

When Dad’s heard about ELANATION, you could almost see the skip in their step. To discover a company whose core focus is to build healthy technology solutions for their family, a company bridging the physical and digital worlds for their 5-12 year old children and a company on a mission to turn living room tech tantrums into inspiring dinner conversations about sport and local athletes – well, Mr Chief Internet and technology officer had a big smile.
I always knew that one-day I would build a global children’s company – but for every global mission there is a hop, step and a jump to getting there. Today, I am excited to announce our latest jump into the wide and wonderful world of Android. To all the Dad’s of Android families that I met at the AWS conference, here you go – as promised: Link
